I am considering upgrading from a 228 Seafarer to the 30 Marlin but have never had to deal with a head and holding tank. What are the secrets (other than not letting anyone use it) to maintaining the vacuflush head and holding tank to avoid odors and other problems? Do you have to pump out after every trip? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Marlin is designed with a macerator and overboard discharge. You can discharge any time as long as you are offshore....I believe 5 miles. You can opt to 'pump out' via the on deck port at the dock. Mine never smells but had to swap out for a new macerator recently.

Here's a great tip for extending the life of the macerator. Flush holding tank entirely, then, fill tank with freshwater through the on deck pump out port. Discharge again and now you've removed all the salt from the system. (the intake is seawater).

The tank is only 10 gallons so plan on discharging after a long weekend with several people on board. An overflow and poorly tightened bolts will ruin a trip. Good Luck!

Any Vacuflush system I have ever seen gets its water from the fresh water holding tank. Not seawater which limits odors due to the lack of seawater but its always a good idea to pour holding tank treatment if you dont empty the waste tank for an extended peroid of time..Especially during the hot summer months...

As stated, the vacuflush heads use freshwater. The manual pump water draw sea water.
I use the blue additive at every pumpout/discharge which helps with breakdown and smell. Just don't let the holding tank fill or worse over fill. This will certainly cause holding tank odor issues.

Make sure you always have the discharge valve open before you start the pump out. The newer ones have what they call "duck valves" on each side of the pump. If you don't have the valve open it blows them out. I know! Its a sh-ty job to change um!.. And always flush it out with water. I aways add treatment.
