On the starboard meter reads 12.5 when you turn the key on. The port meter it pegs out over 18, what could be the problem would it be the regulater?

That's where I'd start ... usually a combo part with the rectifier on Yam motors.

Does it read 18 when you just turn the key or when you start the motor?
If the first case, the meter is shot most likely

Verify readings with a digital multimeter, a 10 buck unit from Sears sunday sale flyer works fine.

At 18 volts, the electronics, computers, lights, refrig, etc will all self destruct.

Reads 18 volts even when motors are running.
My questions was: Does it read 18 volts with the ignition ON with the motor NOT running?
If so, gauge is probably bad.

If it reads 18V with the motors not running. it's a bad meter. Unlikely that a 12V battery can maintain 18V even if over charged.

Not onlu unlikely, it's physically impossible.
