Hello,
Cool forum. I am looking at a few Marlins one is a equiped with the 250's and the other has the 350's. My question is that if the price, "quality", hours, equipment being just about equal, would you go for the 350's or the one with the 250's. Plan to do off shore fishing out of the FL-Keys on Gulf and Atl sides. Some overnighters but this is my first boat over 24' and I just don't know if the bigger motors are needed for this size boat. Suggestions?

350's are overkill for this boat and not sure if Grady even has the specs. on their website for this config. I'm sure Center Console owners will disagree because they are all about speed. The Marlin hull design and beam simply will not perform as much as you would expect with the 200HP increase. Depending how you define offshore is another topic. The range on this vessel is nothing short of outstanding. If you plan on going 80+ milles out.....then I would go with the 350's.

The F250 are a perfect fit for the Marlin. I would guess the F350 would just burn more fuel and decrease your range.

Thanks Grady678 and Gman25- With all of my smaller boats, there was always that "overkill" level where performance really did not improve drastically, and sometimes decreased due to the larger motor. The 350's were an option for the Marlins but as far as I can see, the vast majority of the boats older than 2005 had the dual 250's.

I can guess but would assume that range, with the bigger motors (more fuel use per hour), taking its toll in the long run as well.

Now its time to really buckle down to think about what I plan to do with it. I had planned on using it as a part time sport diving vessel for friends and family, and we would not be going that far off shore for that purpose. Fishing... Redfish, Grouper, Sea Bass, Wahoo, Tuna, Dolphin. I would leave the big stuff up to charters.

250's are my first choice I guess... :hmm

If I was buying a used Marlin, my first choice would be F250 motors. If I were buying a brand new Marlin my first choice would be the new "lightweight" 300hp Yamahas. I agree with what was posted above, the F350 engines are overkill and being able to cruise at 40 knots is rare here off NJ (especially when offshore 70 to 100 miles).

Agree with all comments, especially TM. The 300s are the perfect match. I have the 225s since the 250s did not come until 2005. They do fine but a few knots higher cruise would be nice on occasion.

The Marlin is an awesome fishing and cruising boat and will handle way more seas than you will want to be in.

I agree with all comments.I own a Marlin with F350s,its an over kill!!! BTW even on the range bit,its an under performer, unless one gets a flat sea to cruse at 40 knots, which is rare in the Arabian sea atleast. But I love this fuel guzzler :) :)

Long time Great Grady member HDGWJOE has his Marlin for sale - look in other section, wife has heath problems - forces sale.
Meaningless differece in a one year difference manufactured, more important is how used and taken cared of.

His setup is pefect.

Good luck.

Yes gradydriver there are some very nice Marlin 300s at the Taylor Marine Center Site here in Ocean City Maryland The 2006 with 125 hrs on the Yam 250 4-strokes is immaculate.
