I am looking into repowering my 1999 209 Escape. The boat call out for 225hp Max. It currently has 150hp Yamaha 2 stroke. I would like to have more power . I was looking into the Etec or HPdi. Which HP do you recomend? Is anyone have the same boat with new power?

200 HPDI...everything will bolt right up. Great motor and you will like having the additional 50 HP.

These motors are bulletproof.

Yup... What he said. The 200 HPDI is absolutely the best motor for your boat.

The 4 stroke F200/225 is more than 100 lbs heavier, be careful if you go 4 stroke, check with Grady first.

For 4 stroke fans, the Suzie 175 is of comparable weight to the V6 - 2 strokes.

No four stroke can come close to the performance of the 200 HPDI, pound for pound.

If the 150 Yami is a small block, then the weigh diff is even greater of the F200/225 big bocks.

If you are only looking to get more power, I'd go with a used 200 or 225 OX66. Heck, I bet you could find a new leftover out there somewhere...

I am locate in Caifornia, They not allow NEW Hpdi in the state because it is a 2 star motor. I think they banned couple years ago, that why it is rare in Cali. I like the 200HP HPDI but I can't get a new one. I try to find a used one but no luck. I think 200hp Four stroke is to heavy for my boat. Is 200 HPDI has alot of smoke?

I had a 1999 209 with a 175 and never felt underpowred. Your probably going 4 storke I'd go with the 200.

Why not go E-Tec, I think they are rated for use in CA... A 200 E-Tec or 200 E-Tec HO would be a very noticeable increase in torque, speed, etc, and probably be close to your 150 as far as fuel consumption, way less in oil consumption if you have it programmed for the XD100...

just my $.02

Is 200hp HPDI and 200hp Etec have the same power and torque? I think 200Hp Etec HO is 100lbs heavier than 200hp ETEC reqular. Do you think 200hp reqular etec will push my boat?

No question the Regular 200hp E-Tec would push your boat, extraordinarily well. The E-Tecs are super powerful motors...

I'll vouch for the E Tec. I have an E Tec 250 on my Gulfstream 23 and it's a great motor.

Another vote for the 200 e-tec small block.

When I was looking at them for mine I figured the extra 25 hp over the 175 was all on the top end, and the 175 was a grand or so less, so that's what I would have done. Problem is, they are more money than the Yams, and would have cost me about five grand difference after I sold the F150. The controls and instruments are bout $800-$1000 I think.

For a 10-year old boat I would be looking for a low-hour take-off. Can you rig your boat yourself? I've seen them done with an engine hoist. I think the factory warranties on new motors require installation by a qualified technician.

Since New HPDI not allow in California and it is hard to find one used . If I can find a 200hp HPDI used I can install myself. But If I will go with the New Etec I let the dealer install. Today I call around for the left over Etec, one of the local dealer has 2008 Etec 200hp regular in stock. They will call me back with the quote tomorrow. and Evinrude having promotion on (5yrs warranty + up to $500 rebate + Plus up to $1000 rebate on 2008 and ealier model)

Thats kinda how I got mine... Dealer had it as an 07 leftover in 08, plus Evinrude was having the 5 year warranty and cash back promo. Got the motor, new hydrualic steering, guage pack, etc for an AWESOME price (plug for Barnacle Bill's Marine in Southeast NJ)...

As with any older boat, the motor is probably a tad havier than the original two stroke that was on there. Many a marine surveyor has told me (and I did this on my boat) that if you have the cut out transom with the outboard in a motor well, you should brace the new motor.

In my case, I used a piece of 4" polished aluminum "c" channel tapped for the two top bolt holes of the motor bracket, running the lenght of the motor well. I then had an aluminum cover fabricated for it, so that all my fuel lines, cables, etc are run throufgh the channel. Not only does the "c" channel spread the weight of the new motor over a much greater area of transom, but it helps to organize and clean up all the unsightly cables, wires, etc going into the motor.

Just my $.02

Bren, Which gauges did you got? Do you have the pictures where the motor mount on transom? I would like to see how did you rig yours.

Not sure "which" guages I got, wasn't aware that there were multiple options in that respect. I have the tach, tilt/trim, fuel flow, etc though.

As for the mount, I have one picture, before I capped the "c" channel, right after I bolted it up.

I will take some more pics next time I am down in MD of the finished product.
