What's the difference

I believe a seacock has a flange built in that normally gets bolted to the hull. Most brass seacocks also have a small plug (typically 1/8" or 1/4") in them to allow you to winterize, drain lines, etc.

An inline ball valve is just that, typically has female threads on both ends. Most of the time there are some sort of adapters on both ends (brass, bronze, stainless and plastic).

Hope this sense.

I believe Scott is correct. Sea cocks are designed for strength. They are made to take the weight of a person pushing against it with his foot. If that were done to a ball-valve with the req'd adapters, very likely it would break, flooding the bilge and making for an exciing day at sea.

The threads are different too. The top has NPT (tapered), the bottom is NPS (non tapered pipe), your water intakes don't have tapered threads (not every hull is the same thickness).
