Replaced the factory Horizon 500 on my 265 with a Lewmar ProFish 700 paired with a 22lb Lewmar Delta plow anchor on the end of 20' of 1/4" chain and have been very happy with it. Windlass has free fall and is far more robust than what it replaced.

Were the mounting holes the same for 500 and the 700?

Thanks

Unfortunately, they were not and as the 500's gypsy was on the left, the 700 was on the right so the large hole where the chain/rode fed wasn't quite covered by the 700's footprint either. I filled the old holes and covered with a scrap piece of starboard that was both screwed and 5200'd into place. Drilled the new holes through that and the pulpit to mount the 700 so the starboard is functional for covering the holes but not load bearing.958B7291-F0B9-4D30-953F-92B19590BCB3.jpg5789045A-B743-41A0-8B48-5EED27C402BB.jpg

I switched from the Horizon 500 to the Lewmar Pro Fish 700 with 1/2" 8-plait 300' / 25' of chain. Mine is mounted on the lid for the anchor line. Same place as original one was. This placement give you a straighter drop for the line. If you move up to the bow pulpit it's not as clean but if you don't need as much line it should be fine. The Pro Fish 1000 is 5/8" line and is overkill for a 28' boat.

That being said you have to be careful with mounting it on the lid. I fell asleep on the switch earlier this year and tore the windlass out. I'm in the process of fabricating a new one with more reinforcement.

What brand / model# of anchor did you switch to? What are the advantages of this type compared to the danforth you had initially purchased?
I went to the Mantus M1 17#. The Fortress FX-11 wasn't heavy enough to self deploy. Seems to set every time and not move. Had it set down in the Keys back in May on a tide change by 7 Mile Bridge and it never moved.
