Yamaha 200 I-4

Now that Yamaha has had their new 200 in-line four out for some time is there anyone who has some real world experience with this new engine? We are thinking of a repower for our 228G.
 
Repowered my 208 with the F200XB......love it. Put alittle over 100 hrs. on it in the last couple of months. Performance is great with tons of power , gets out of the hole fine, and top end is great. Best part is the fuel economy....twice the range over the old 2 stroke. Don't know how it would fair on a 228 .....I look closely at that...might not be enough engine

Now running an "old Evinrude" 200 thirsty two stroke now and performance is great. I'm hoping that the difference in engine weight won't affect the performance any.
 
The inline 200 seems a little small for a 228, I thought the F200 6 cylinder was small for a 208 I owned. I had a 228G with the F250 and it seemed the right size.
 
Most of the older Seafarers came rigged with 200 hp engines. My 1986 Seafarer came with a 200 hp 2-stroke and performance was fine. It planned easily with 4 people plus scuba gear on board and topped out at 42 mph with a light load. IMO, performance was as good or better than the 228 rigged with a 225 hp 4-stroke. The point is that the pre-SV2 hulls don't require as much hp as the newer designs.

So if you have a 1991 or earlier hull, 200 hp should be fine. But be aware that a 4-stroke will not produce the lower end torque of a comparable 2-stroke. Hole shot is not really important for an offshore boat. But the ability to stay on plane at lower speeds in a nasty chop is important. So be sure to prop the engine correctly. You will likely need 15" pitch and may benefit from a 4 blade.
 
I also recently repowered my 208 with an I-4 Yamaha. I absolutely love it so far but I agree with everyone else that it might be not be enough for a 228.
