Looking for guidance on replacing this system as I shorted out original when replacing battery. Installed replacment CL7 but is not communicating with engines or fuel sensor. Is this easy fix or do I need to take in to dealer? Thanks!

The CL7 has to be configured for your setup I believe. The dealer/installer usually does that . I have no idea what has been previously configured on your replacement unit.

When someone says they "shorted out" something it's a clue for me that they need to bring a professional in.

Question ? Does one really need a CL5 if they have a 3 gauge set up (one for each engine and the one illustrating fuel burn etc) ??

did you mean a CL7? The yamaha CL5 is an audio mixing console..
Do you need a CL7,, no the gauges will display the basics.

Correct!
This happened also to me searching for the part number of the CL5 and the Yamaha Mixing Console popped up.
Using Yamaha Marine CL5 as search words will eliminate this, same with other Yamaha marine stuff who has same name as music related stuff.

Funny, I did try adding marine to my search but the audio console keep coming up. I tried again and got a Yamaha piano:) On the third attempt I finally found the display and it is similar to the 6YC display. I don't know what the differences are but regardless, you don't absolutely have to have a display. The triple gauges show most if not all of the critical info.

"Tis the season..."

I assume you swapped the pos and negatives. I don't think that would kill the display. It may have blown out something at the engines or on the engine harnesses. There are several fuses on the motors, check all of them especially the smaller capacity ones. Does the display power up and can you change menus? If so, it may not be damaged.

I don't have a CL5, I have a CL7 and I like it a lot. It's really just a garmin with a yahama app on it. So if you need to display any Garmin info on it, you can repurpose it. I used it as a chart plotter before I had the rest of my electronics put in. It's handy.
