Yamaha tach & speedometer Problem

I have a 1995 Yamaha 200 on my Adventure 208. The Multifunction Speedo and Tach. instruments seem to be working, but are so dim that I have to cup my hands around them to block out light to see the numbers. Does anyone know of a fix or do they both need to be replaced? Thanks for your help.
 
As far as I know, there are no contrasts or brightness adjustments. I am a bit surprised that they would both go at the same time.
 
From what I remember, I could barely see if the lights were on during the day when my gauges were brand new. How do your's look at night? It's a relatively low intensity amber light. You sure you aren't chasing a ghost? :)

Look at the ground wires for the gauges to make sure they are clean and tight. If memory serves, the grounds for the speed should run to the tach which will run to the key switch, which connects to the 10-pin main engine harness...or something like that.

Also, are those your only gauges? If so, your problem may be in the running lights circuit (that's what they should be wired to). Are your running lights working OK? Get access to the back of your switch panel and look for loose wires running from the gauges to the running lights switch and/or breaker, corroded connections, etc. Probably wouldn't hurt to reterminate those wires anyway just to be sure.

I used to have wiring diagrams for those gauges but gave them to the new owner of the boat. Hope that helps.
 
I have a 2001 30' Marlin with twin Yamaha 250's and just had the same problem with one tach that eventually you could not see at all. I checked all the wiring, fuses leads on motor and eventually narrowed it down to having to replace the instrument. Found a great deal on a ne win the box one with cables on E-bay.
 
The LED displays go dim after awhile.
Also check Marine Connection Discount in Ft. Pierce FL.
Earlier models have a different background screen color than newer. Found that out.
 
Thanks for all your help. After checking the wiring for faulty connections, I ended up replacing both gauges with new ones from Central Marine in St. Petersburg, FL. Good service and a discount also. Sent gauges the same day.

The new ones are nice and bright, but now trim indicator doesn't work. Will try to check the trim sender on the port side of the engine.

Does any one have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
 
Check Yamaha trim problem, that is at the moment posted under your posts. There some good trouble shooting guides.

I would like to know how much the gauges cost. You can post a reply or send me an email at rcrudder@gmail.com. I suspect that I will have to replace both on my 200 Yamaha.
