Like everything, worked fine yesterday but doesn't today.
My port 225 2 stroke trim motor didn't work today.
Hit the individual switch to trim up and it clicked at the motor. Hit it a few more times and it worked.
Is it:
1. Bad connection at helm
2. Bad connection a t solenoid
3. Bad solenoid
4. Something else
5. All
6. None
7. WTF?

If it clicked, it's not a bad switch at the helm.In addition, the switch at the motor cowling is independent so it should click when that is operated too. Most likely a bad connection or a bad relay. Bad motor is possible but eliminate relay and connections first. Try bypassing the relay by wiring to the motor leads directly. Your trim motor may have 2 or three leads. If two, one is ground and the others are power for up or for down. If two leads, reversing the poer connections changes motor direction.
If it works all the time, the motor is good. Next is to clean up and tighten all the connections ( pay attention to both ends the ground wires), after that I would suspect the solenoid (relay) You could try tapping the relay with a small hammer while someone is holding the switch and while it is clicking but not pumping. If the motor starts up, the relay is most likely bad.

Thanks,
From my OMC days the relay wiring is ground, blue (sky) for up and green (grass) for down.
Is that the same on Yamaha?
I'll test this weekend.

That's pretty funny. My Yami has a two wire tilt motor and the leads are SkyBlue and Light Green:)

Neither is specifically up or down, the polarity of the connections determines rotation direction. I would think yours would be similar

I'm sorry to tell you that I lost the power trim and tilt motor on my 2010 Tournament 275 port engine this summer at just 65+/- hours and had the same problem. I went out the boat one morning, went to trim both engines down, the starboard engine trimmed down fine and the port engine stopped halfway. The switch on the engine didn't do anything different than the switch on the throttle. I was told by my mechanic that PTT (power trim and tilt) motors never go on my engine (I have twin Yamaha 150's) but in my case - it went. Yamaha paid for labor and materials to do the repair and my mechanic was able to trim the engine down manually so that I could use the boat for the weekend (just couldn't trim the engine). I did have to pay for the boat haul and relaunch but to me that's just part of the cost of owning a boat).

Good luck - I hope it's not you PTT motor (and I too was told to jump out the solenoid to see if it was bad).
