I have a 225 Yamaha 4 stroke. What is the average amount of hours you could expect on a Yamaha 4 stroke that is taken care of. I understand there are a lot of variables. Is 800 to 1000 near the max???

Lots of them that are used often have over 2000 hr on them.

Some have exhaust tube corrosion problems that shortens their life. But individual engines either have this problem or they don't.

Most engines fail as the result of corrosion or fuel system issues. Very few wear out.

Tunes: I don't think 800 - 1,000 is anywhere near the max. I put 1200 hours on an F250 and it was flawless the entire time. A commercial guy I spoke with said he changes them at 3,000 hours. Of course, he puts those hours on in about two year's time. If it takes five or ten years to collect those same hours, then you're more likely to see the other issues that Doc mentioned.

We just hit 1,100 hours on our 2006 F150s, and we are headed offshore tomorrow so another 15+ hrs by the time we get back.

Engines are just as strong and efficient as when they were new.

I expect well over 2000 hours before I even consider repowering.
