The standards are 30 degree, but one of the best upgrades I have done to my 228 was to put Burnewiin rod holders on my boat. Check them out, I do not know anyone who regrets their purchase.

I don't think it is about the top end speed with a 228 / 226, I would want it for the low end grunt. I regularly fish albacore with 3 guys and 400lbs of ice and all the gear. Now pile on 30 fish and things get heavy quickly. The torque of a 250 or 300 would be nice for offshore fishing...

I have a yamaha 9.9 hi-thrust on my 228, it will push you along just fine even in a decent amount of current. I know some people don't care for a kicker, but to me you would be a fool to go offshore with out a back up.
