    ValvTec DeCarb ???

I've read others mention de-carbing their motors. What exactly does this do? Is it purely preventative in nature? One of my '90 250 Yamaha's is sounding a bit like a cement mixer. I've got great compression and the motor starts great and runs fine with just a little gas and/or oil slick out...

    Worst Riding Boats

You know that entire thread reminds of the self proclaimed "experts" who love to expound on the negative charateristics of sports cars. I've been lucky enough (and dumb enough) to have owned and driven some of the worlds best performance cars. Never fails that someone who (when pushed) admits...

    Panel replacement with Starboard?

I have a '90 Marlin and have noticed the same thing on mine. I would think that starboard would work fine. Not sure how it would work out cost wise, but in the past on my Pacemaker I've had great results with simple plywood (not even marine grade) coated with West Systems epoxy (normal resin...

    Engine Starting Problems

Grog It never occurred to me to take your comment as condensending. You've given me and others a lot of very good advice and I have never seen you respond in any way other then courteous. If I can pick your brain a bit, in your opinion what is the best/easiest way to check the secondary...

    Engine Starting Problems

Grog I'm new to outboards so forgive my ingnorance. I've check power to the coil on my inboards in the past without any problems. Are outboards different? Also perhaps I was being to general.

    Engine Starting Problems

If one side isn't getting spark then I'd start there. Get a volt meter and a manual for the motor and starting from the battery follow the voltage from there all the way to the plug or in this case where the volatage dead ends. Could be a bad coil, connection, etc.

    what is first year gulfstream23 & sailfish25 had seav2 h

Regarding heads. You may also want to consider one of the models made by Thetford. I put one of these on my Pacemaker and it works great. That boat was (is) older and did not have a holding tank. There was no place to put a tank that didn't require a long hose run, etc. They had a model...

lost reverse on '90 250 Yamaha

Gotcha. The shift rod was our first fear since as you said the powerhead has to be removed. I'll work on being more deliberate with my shifting Thanks

lost reverse on '90 250 Yamaha

Will do once the mechanic gets it apart. When you say "slow shifting" do you mean it wasn't properly adjusted as far as the gear engaging or are you referring to the actual speed that I shift the motor? Dumb question but I just got this boat (only used it 3X so far) and have never had...

lost reverse on '90 250 Yamaha

Actually it now looks like we're just going to open her up and replace/rebuild whats needed. I agree with your views regarding the motors. While they do check out fine (compression, etc) my thought process is to run them for a season and if I like the boat I'll repower (yes a lot of $$$ but...

lost reverse on '90 250 Yamaha

Thanks for the advice, opinions and info. Unfortunately with the site down for a few days I didn't get to check the thread. The mechanic was afraid it was a broken shift rod but turns out its "just" the lower unit. I'm sure I'll screw up the description and I don't have the SELOC book in...

lost reverse on '90 250 Yamaha

I'm going to be handing this problem over to my mechanic on Monday but figured I'd through this out to the group and see if anyone has any ideas. Curiosity and apprehension of the mechanics bill makes for a long weekend (at least the Jets have a bye this week so thats one less thing to...

About to replace GPS.. C-Map, Navionics or Garmin ??

I've been very happy with the Navionics chart used in my Lowrence GlobalMap 5000C. Its great offshore and inshore. Offshore when rifting for shark it was spot on....if the chart plotter showed us going over a drop off a fast look to the fishfinder confirmed it. Lowrences customer service is...

    Re-Naming Boats

Just curious and a bit superstitious :? I know all about the various procedures/traditions that go with re-naming a boat. But what about having 2 boats with the same name? Are there any superstitions, etc about using the name on my "old" boat on the "new" one at the same time until the...

    Foward Fuel Tank Hatch

Check out a commercial fishing supplier like Hamilton Marine. They have a number of water tight deck hatches....not really cheap...but they do exist. I'm looking at them for a potential project on my '90 Marlin. The aft cockpit "hatch" where the A/C unit and/or gennie goes is in my sights...
