200HP Yamaha motor loses power - question

checked compression last night - all cylinders at 120psi. Flushed with fresh water for 20 min. Nice strong steady stream of water. Took the boat out this morning - started up fine. Drove around for about 15 min. Warning tone came on and stayed on and I couldn't restart. Sounds like overheat...

200HP Yamaha motor loses power - question

The weird thing is that, if I ignored the odd sound, I think I could have cranked the throttle and been fine. It only stalled when I dropped down to idle. I was being cautious because of the noise and that's why I limped back to the dock at 5mph. As for overheating, it WAS 90 degrees out, and I...

200HP Yamaha motor loses power - question

Thanks. I'll be back to the boat on Saturday. I'm hoping it was just the flush hose.

200HP Yamaha motor loses power - question

no alarms at all. Just the wheezing sound when I got it started again. It was very weird and happened suddenly after a great day of riding around without any problems.

200HP Yamaha motor loses power - question

I have a 1997 200Hp yamaha 2 stroke motor. Never had a problem with it before. On Sunday, I suddenly lost power while idling, after a full day of riding around. Tried to start up again and couldn't get the motor to turn over. Seemed like a battery issue (batteries showing 12.4 volts). I was able...

    wiring 12v charger/cig lighter

yes, I'm trying to install a 12v charger for portable electronics. I know it's only 2 wires - I've run the positive to my fuse panel and the negative to an available negative terminal. The batteries are switched on and working (all other electronics are working fine, so I assume my main circuit...

    wiring 12v charger/cig lighter

Any tips on wiring a new 12v charger on my 208? I suppose I'll have to get a voltmeter and start testing things but I'm wondering if I'm missing something stupid. I've tried wiring to my fuse panel (tried with a variety of fuse sizes). I've tried with 2 separate chargers. I've double and triple...

    broken anti-ventilation (cavitation) plate

I suppose it's possible that someone at my dock bumped into the boat, although it would have been hard to break the plate without dinging the prop. It's also possible that a lobster trap got caught between the prop & the plate but definitely weird that I didn't hear or feel anything.

    terrible time installing fuel sender

plastic tank, metal screws & drill bits. That's where I'd think the spark would be caused. I'll give it another try in the winter in my yard. At least there if it catches fire I won't be worried about sinking.

    broken anti-ventilation (cavitation) plate

Went to the boat on Sunday to find that a nice chunk of my anti-ventilation (aka cavitation) plate was missing. Don't know how or when it happened. I've heard conflicting reports about it - some say I need to get it fixed ASAP, others say I can wait until the off-season. I got a quote of...

    terrible time installing fuel sender

tried backing out with a screw extractor kit. Tried several sizes but the broken screw wouldn't budge. I bought shorter screws for the new wema sender and put the sender on with only 4 screws (left the broken one in). I think the rubber washer will be tight enough for the season but in the fall...

    terrible time installing fuel sender

yeah, I was wondering about the no sparks thing. Also, you can't tap a plastic tank. I'm going to have to come up with some kind of hack until I can do this in my yard over the winter

    terrible time installing fuel sender

I have had a terrible time installing a replacement fuel sender (should have been a simple job). The previous owner had installed an ISSPRO ultimate sender. These units have a large hat that requires extra long screws. I didn't realize this before I tried to install the new WEMA sender. The...

    holding tank sending unit

thanks. Wema sells both. I believe the float on the inside is for holding tanks (not gas) but it looks like the previous boat owner had a holding tank sender in the gas tank (may be why it wasn't working properly). I ordered the new sender from Wema, and didn't realize that the old sender...

    holding tank sending unit

Thanks. I believe a "holding tank" sender is a kind of sender that can be used in the gas tank or holding tank - Wema actually sells them. They are based on a tube with a float inside. My sender doesn't work properly so I pulled it and it seems to be this kind of sender. I was just wondering if...

    install sounder/chartplotter - DIY?

Thanks for the tip. The actual chartplotter install was indeed very easy. I have to pull the boat out of the water to add the new transducer. I'm hoping the hardest part is drilling a larger wire hole and sealing the old ducer mount holes.

    holding tank sending unit

does anyone know if grady ever included a holding tank fuel sender as standard? I bought a 1997 grady 208, and the fuel sender seems to be bad. I pulled the sender today to measure for a new one and was surprised to find a holding tank sender. No markings on the sender and the wiring harness...

    install sounder/chartplotter - DIY?

I have a 1997 208 adventure with a Garmin GPS unit that is just as old. The sounder died this year and needs to be replaced. I'm considering a GPSMAP 546S but wondering how hard the install will be to do myself. I assume I can just fish the new wires along the same path as the old GPS wires, and...

    garmin - 2 transducers?

I have an old 235S sounder on my boat. When I bought the boat it came with the unit and had 2 hull-mounted transducers. I think one or both have gone bad because the unit has suddenly lost the ability to measure depth. I've checked both and they are locked down all the way. Does anyone know...

    208 - fuel ground wire

Thanks. I checked the Grady site first but the manual doesn't even mention the fuel tank ground. I guess I'll connect to the negative battery terminal and hope for the best.
