As I alluded to earlier, just because the chain is 5/16 or 1/4 or whatever thickness, that alone does not mean that chain is the correct size. The spec for the gypsy or the manufacturer's data sheet will specify a chain designation like 8mm BBB, Lewmar for 5/16 chain or perhaps 1/4 inch G4 .
