Whatever the reason, having them mounted to the transom eliminates those boats from a potential purchase. Definitely something to be aware of going forward.
2006 282 with 2016 F250's clean bottom 1.9mpg at 3400 24-26 mph. Dirty bottom it drops to 1.4mpg. Original engines were 3.3 F250's and did slightly less.

It is outboard of the pickups, location favors the outer stringer. In clean water, I have no issues; however, following in the wake of another boat I occasionally lose bottom.
I have a B164 mounted in my 282. It is a 20 degree and located between the stringers on the port side. If I remember correctly, it is about in line with the aft portion of the battery tray if you were to draw a line from port to starboard.
