1995 Sailfish 272 Repower. Suzuki 200 or 225??

Yes thanks. I'm very familiar with sunset marine. Unfortunately after taxes labor props parts and rigging etc the mercurys are still way more money than the Suzukis. By like 10k dollars. If they were in the ballpark I would have already pulled the trigger on the digital merc 225s. Unfortunately my budget only allows the zukes.

Where are you getting your quotes from then? I don't see how the Mercury's could be $10k+ more than the prices on the Suzuki's you quoted earlier after install, especially when the outboards are essentially the same cost? I mean, unless the other place you're quoting is including free installation or something in there...

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give an update. Turns out suzuki has backordered all of their mechanical V6s for some reason. Digital is all that's available right now. So I decided to go with the i4 200APs with 15.25" 22P 4 blade props, and man I couldn't be happier. Got the boat back in the water, and currently breaking in the engines. Feels like a different boat. The digital flyby wire IS a game changer. The boat feels so much more nimble and maneuverable. Docking is absolutely way easier. The instant throttle response, in and out of gear, that is workable with finger tips is a world of difference from the stiff mechanical etec controls. Wide open I hit 46mph at 5950 rpm going into mission bay channel and going out against the swell I hit 44.5mph at 5850 rpm with 202 gallons of fuel plus another guy and full 20 gallon bait tank and fishing gear. Probably not quite as loaded as I will ever be but the numbers are impressive. At 25-27mph im getting 2.0-2.1 mpg @ 3800-3900rpm and at 30-32mph im getting 1.8-2mpg @4100rpm. 35mph is 1.8mpg. I am blown away by the performance of these 200s on such a heavy boat and the fuel economy is pretty insane. I would definitely recommend these engines to anyone who is considering them. They swing big props and can push big heavy boats. I was very skeptical at first, and super nervous pushing the throttle down for the first time, but I guess I'm a believer now. Thanks to everyone for chiming in and helping in the decision making process.

Congrats on the repower and that you're completely satisfied with the purchase. I've definitely gone down the rabbit hole a few times to where you overthink things, feeling like you're about to lose your mind, etc. I was going to say, I don't think that you'll be lacking in terms of power with the 200's but regardless, it sounds like you definitely made the right decision and are completely happy with the results. Good luck!

NICE! Glad you got the right props first try.

One thing to be careful of is the ease of shifting and the detent position between Neutral out of gear and "IN gear at idle". I back into my slip in a strong current. When backing you tend to not look at the F-N-R on the gauges. Very easy to leave one in F or R when you think its in N... I put some black tape to mark N on the throttles.

Been there. Done that.

Garret, your numbers are impressive and will improve more after break-in.
What make and model props are you running? What hole are your engines mounted on?
While my eco enertias provide impressive performance, I do have issues with bite. I have wondered if the right 4 blade would help, but thought I would lose performance. However, looking at your numbers, I'm thinking otherwise.

My engines are mounted as low as they can go. My props are Suzuki watergrip stainless steel props . 4x15.25x22P. The holeshot is definitely a bit sluggish compared to the v6 250 etecs i had before, but im not complaining at all. Its a well worth it trade off for all other performance metrics. Again I was pretty blown away and they greatly exceeded my expectations.

So does that mean you are on the top hole? I ask because mine are as low as they will go, but it is the 2nd from top hole. I can't use the top hole without hitting the transom.
