I am looking at a 2010 Seafarer and the paint on the back of the Yamaha 250HP is chipping. When you touch it, it feels like a ton of salt has eaten away at the paint. The boat is very clean otherwise. Any idea why this would be happening, is it anything to be concerned about, and, can it be touched up?1786822897926.png

Pretty common from sun damage. i’ve heard of some shops that will refinish them. you’d probably have to do the cowl as well to get a good paint match.

Looks like harness damage and either the cowl was repaired or replaced. Body shop knock that out quick - marine repair shop, not so much…
 
To me, it looks more like the damage was caused by a foreign material (rope?) rubbing the paint off. For example, a line tied from the stbd stern, going port-wise across the back. And that caused really bad damage to the hood, requiring replacement. In the end, the cause is a moot point - but it's a curious/abnormal pattern.

It's not rubbing. It's stress. Not sure from what. Could be rope.

I'm looking at refinishing mine. The top engine cover for lack of a better term looks like a fiberglass component. The lower "clamshell" part wraps around. It's some kind of plastic. It doesn't hold paint well. I'm going to paint both pieces for both motors for my F150's. They will be primed with AwlGrip 2-part epoxy primer. My fiberglass/paint guy has an opinion on what to paint with. I'll follow his recommendation.
 
I like the 'rope' explanation. First of all, salt water doesn't eat away paint that applied to the composite material that the cowling is made with.. If the damage is chaffing due to dock lines, I would think that aft lines were crisscrossed against the motor. The upper cowling must have been repainted but the lower cowling and mid stack were not.
