I bought a 1999 228 in North Carolina and had it shipped to me in California and it got here a couple hours ago. It's been interesting to say the least. The last few months I've asked for a lot of advice here and lot's of you really helped me with this purchase. I really want to thank TUNAHUNTER, LITE TACKLE, Ky Grady and LONGSTREET you guys went above and beyond with your time and advice. I'm taking it to a lake tomorrow to get familiar with it before I head out for Salmon. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions in the days to come.

I just purchased a 1988 228G in May. In decent shape but since I own a Lund boat as well I am doing a complete restore other than re-power. That will come next year. Cant wait to take mine out.

You my friend are the complete opposite of Russ lol.

I would check gearcase and bracket for water. Do a tune up of filters and plugs. Take a fuel sample. Then start it make sure it’s charging and pissing water and shifting along with steering. After that throw it in!

Take the advice and go through it some prior to hitting the water. Make sure all the fluids are good, shifting is good, pumps, lighting etc.. You know what I mean.

Mel,
Lake Sonoma is a perfect place for a shakedown run. I like the idea of checking lower unit for water if not already done. Grease bearings on trailer. Good luck!

Congrats on the boat. Sure you don't want to service it first??
I will before I start fishing in the ocean, but I have a big lake 20 minutes away so I'm wanting to test it out. So far I love what I'm seeing it looks so much better in person.

Gear case is brand new (about 60 hours ago) But I plan on giving it a oil change.

Yeah it's been a few years since I've had a boat up there. I ran the motor awhile ago and all seems good. It shifts fine, the crankcase is new.

Also I'm going to replace all the wheel bearings and seals. My transporter had a wheel bearing go out in Nebraska last Friday evening. The seller had a complete bearing set up on the spare tire. I found a shop in North Platte that took care of it.

Atleast run it at home to make sure water pump works, bilge turns on, horn works. I understand your enthusiasm to get on some water. Do a little due diligence. Your feel better knowing some critical parts of the boat are working.

I did, I ran it and checked that all pumps turn on.

Congrats on the ride. Honestly, if it is s 4 stroke, change the oil. Put a new water separator filter in it. I always run ring free in my gas. I bought the hype and just do it. Inspect the fuel and then if it's good, add 93 octane ethanol free to top it off. This way if the fuel is stale and extra octane could help. Again, if it's a 4 stroke , the extra octane will retard predetination.

My boat is a 2008,bought in 09 and I just replaced my scupper hoses and fuel fill hose. Inspect the scupper hoses for cracking . Make sure the seacocks work by moving them up and down and pop the inspection plates on the drain hoses for the fish boxes and such.

Captain Ron says..if it's going to happen it's going to happen out there. I would just eyes on things like hoses and through hulls because those things are critical systems .

I never saw your 228 questions. I love mine but I have 8 footitis. Lol. Would love to have a Marlin one day.

Well after getting the first good night sleep for a couple weeks I decided not to test her out today. I'm going to do more due diligent's and check it out a bit more first. I've gotta go down and register it. I need to pick up some fenders and make sure it has all the coast guard required equipment. It's a 2 stroke yamaha 225 OX66.
I'll be in touch.

Well I haven't done much yet. Having a tough time with Department of motor vehicles since all the offices are closed due to the shutdown. Also trying to get insurance on it. I did make arrangements for a local shop to make me a complete set of curtains starting on July 1st. I'm also in the middle of removing a bunch of trees and Saturday Ill pour a couple yards of concrete and then build a 6' redwood fence. It will make my 3 car driveway 4' wider when I'm done. Plus it's been in the high 90's the last couple days. I'm also trying to go through boxes of new parts that the seller sent me. Looks like a lot of filters and a fuel pump.
More to come

Ca DMV can be a real PITA when it comes to out of state vehicles, you'll need to probably make an appointment to get your trailer inspected. I had some bonehead at the DMV inspect mine, he said I was missing some sticker and wouldn't verify it, had to get a hold of the trailer manufacture stating that they do not use those stickers, still had to trailer it the CHP for a verification any ways..... I guess in my area they no longer come out to your residence to verify. they used too...oh well

oh and to add..I also had a bonehead at the DMV desk that did not accept the notary stamp on the pink slip for the boat from the bank in VA. I had to contact the bank and get a certified Lien Release from them ...

I hate the DMV

good luck

I did this in 2013 with another out of state boat and trailer with no problems. No inspection it was a breeze. This time it's becoming a hassle because they are only open for existing appointments? The rep yesterday said I can't even schedule an appointment. She helped me find the forms needed and she said just drop off a a DMV drop box with a check, We'll see.

Good evening! If you don't mind my asking, what were you charged for having the boat shipped across the country? I drove from Seattle out to Maryland and back when I bought my 21' Arima back in 2017. At the time, I called around and got several shipping quotes which ranged anywhere from $3,500 on up to over $7,000. I figured I could do the drive myself for considerably less and spent around $1,800 doing so. Thanks and sounds like a sweet boat!

Bids were $2600 to $4500 The shipper I chose was $2780+$200 to USHIP FEE'S+$200 for added insurance, Then I tipped the driver $400 A little much but my trailer lost a wheel bearing and the driver really came through for me.
