I have the Taco top guns on my boat. I located the center holes just outside the hard top outer frame. I didn't have the welded in plates but after 10+ seasons no issues. I like them up there and out of the way. Only advice I have is to use 15' poles to keep the stress on the hard top at a minimum. Use a backing plate on the bottom side, seal the holes well to ensure no water intrusion into the core and suggest a wedge plate on the top to offset hardtop roll off.

The Lees are nice as well if you want to go off the side. You just need to take the interior panels off and drill through the glass. Use big stainless washers on the backside. GW does it this way, and those Lees are super easy. The only negative is it is tight to get by without them installed, a little tougher when they are there. Not a deal breaker though.
