Gents,
Searched and found very little, hard to believe I'm the only one with this problem. Bought boat with bad gas and drained and replaced fill cap o-rings with generics from West Marine. None were on the caps when I got the boat and apparently I got the incorrect size. So now I have 30-gal of fouled gas. I Just got of the phone with Perko and they are sending me replacement o-rings P/N 054000099B along with 0540 Acccessory Mounting Rings P/N 0540DPRBLK FREE OF CHARGE!! Nice to see this and thumbs up for Perko :dance Most importanly they said not to tighten the cap too tight. Snug it an leave it. Apparently if you tighten it too much it distorts the seal. Wonder why they have 2-holes in it for the deck tool.

What are the differences between the two Perko orings you are getting. I get the first is for the is for the gas caps. But what is the accessory you reference? BTW, I called Perko about getting a replacement part for my mast head light and they did the same thing for me by sending it gratis. What was funny is that I offered to pick it up here in Miami and they said nope you can't come to our place but we will mail to you.

The accessory mounting ring is not an o-ring. It is the same outline and footprint as the fill mounting flange and raises the fill 3/8". Yea, they are real familiar with the problem. They say the builders shouldn't mount them on the gunnels. I don't think a little rain water intrusion hurt in 1998; it just got separated with fuel/water sep. NOW, with ethanol, the water mixes with the gas. Using fuel/water separators is like pissing in the wind. My fuel was "phase-separated" and the color of orange juice.

How come it's so dead around here?? Not seeing much activity considering boatin' season is well underway.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying. On the orings, I check them each time I fill with gas. I replace them once they show any sign of wear or cracking. then I go around and replace all the fill orings: gas, water and diesel for generator.

Have sized them?? West Marine here doesn't stock them. I'll order them from Mcmaster Carr if I had the size. When I get the freebees I'll measure and post.

When I bought my preowned Sailfish I encountered a water/fuel problem.
The guy I used to pump out the tanks in S. FL said that Grady & Boston Whaler use the self venting fuel caps to avoid spills thru a std vent thru the hull. Part of a green initiative.
He said over time the o rings in the cap fail and let water in to the tank from around the cap.
He replaced my fills with std fills and thru hull vents. Haven't had another problem since. Been 5 yrs.

My thoughts exactly ahill. Perko came out with that mounting ring that raises the fill. I'll give this a try, any problems and it's all gone. I believe you can have a perfect seal and still take on water. The cap vents outside of the o-ring, nuff said. What is the regulations for where the thru hull vent is placed in relation to the fill? Be nice to come out right below the fill. With a keen ear while filling, you can usually determine full when you hear the difference in the sound of the air escaping from the vent. How hard was it getting that 1-1/2" fuel line off??

My fuel guy did the conversion.
He cut a pieplate into the innerliner at the fills (I didn't like that) and had no problems with the changeover.
He did have to use larger diameter fill bases to cover the old holes.
In hindsight the pieplate makes sense for future access.
