I am using a straight edge razor and acetone to clean up the old caulk, but I can't get it all off.

Is there a trick to removing the thin layer still left or am I being too anal about it?

Caulk

Try using a dry terry cloth or clean shop rag. Sometimes the thin silicone layer will rub off. On the other hand if its clean and adheres well you can caulk over it.

Just removed all the chaulk from the interior of my cabin and redid it. I used a chaulk remover tool from home depot, got about 90% of it up, then used 3M sharpshooter on a towel and a little elbow greese and got just about all of it to rub off. I would assume the deck would be the same way, that is my next project, just waiting for a stretch of dry days before I do that. Make sure you use a 100% silicone chaulk otherwise you will see mold over time. Grady uses a GE 1700 in Almond I was told by my local dealer. I purchased a GE almond 100% silicone chaulk from Home Depot and color was almost identical and it adhered in the cabin perfectly.
