Has anyone mounted one of these in a 265? Its the big version 17.2" x 8.8". I saw a pix once where someone cut the shelf for the oil tank thats in the rear bilge area. That was the smaller version though, I think..

Not much else I could do unless I get rid of one of the water pickups.Raymarine-Garmin-Furuno-Diplexed-R199-Transducer-Plug-Cut-NEW-Max-10202020-6-scaled.jpeg

That's a big boy. I have a shoot thru that fit where the torpedo would but it is the smaller 1KW one.

I'm planning on installing an R599 in a year or two. I was thinking about removing the shower sub-pump and install it in that part of the bilge. Really only need it while drifting and would use a separate transducer while running. I've never once used the shower on my boat, who knows maybe when the kids get older they will, but that is not what boats are for...they are to fish! Thanks for posting the other picture of the oil tank shelf, great spot and now has me thinking more. Let us know if you end up installing one, would love to hear how it turns out.

just measured and then ordered the R199. I'm so glad I ran across this because Airmar doesn't make them anymore and a R599 is $4k
Talked to Max Stein at maxmarineelectronics.com Very knowledgeable, gave me 5% off and included a Garmin 8 pin connector box and and 8 to 6pin converter for free. Came to $1230something.

They also have a B175L-20 for a good price if anyone is looking

heres pix of my bilge(its end of the season, cut me some slack on the grime...). 26" x 12" I will basically have to remove an oil tank shelf and mount as fwd as possible . Looking at stb side, transom to right, centerline of bilge is bottom out of view. Pump is high on bulkhead not on shelf. I am "pretty sure" that there are not strakes under or fwd of this spot.

I have a M260 in a wet box mounted under the steps on the centerline.

The 265 has 2 big fuel tanks covering much of the centerline. As TUNAHUNTER said it might go where the shower sump is forward but the thruhulls for the Head would be in front of it and it would not work as well on plane. I'm hoping to get this thing reading bottom and bait at 30 mph.

The last few years have been "the golden era" for sounders. It hasn't settled down yet but amazing what has happened, And more to come. I have a Garmin GSD 24 sounder with two switchable transducers. Far better unit than the GSD 22 I had before.

The GSD 26 is a Chirp unit. Up to 2KW of power. Great unit but transducer is expensive and probably should be mounted in the hull.

Garmin has introduced a number of side scan and forward scan products. Simpler transducers to install. Not good if you are looking deep for tile fish or swords but awesome none the least.

For now I'm sticking with my GSD24. My answer doesn't fit everyones use case but its good for me! So much to choose from. You need to decide which wrench fits your problem!

Max at maxmarineelectronics also said the gsd24 was a great improvement over the gsd22. But just going from a B744 to the R199 will be a dramatic improvement to my gsd22. He explains its not just that there is more power but there are 15 ceramics just for the 50kHz and a huge ceramic for the 200kHz. Compared to a single ceramic 600w xducer they are 200 times(20,000%) more sensitive at 50Khz. He said I'll be really happy with it but someday I'll get a gsd 24 and be amazed.
He said the Gsd26 and 2 kw CHIRP xducers are nice but probably not necessary. CHIRP xducers also don't last as long due to longer duty cycles and heat.

edit: I ended up buying a new GSD24 and ditched the GSD22

Im not sure if your Express has the AC thru hull but I just had the Marine Yard drill that out and put in the B 175 HW. Fits fine and I really dont need the AC unit anyway.

Are you talking about the 265? I've asked before, but never saw any evidence of one that actually had an AC installed... I previously confirmed that it was not offered as an option on the 265...

Just glued an airmar M260 1k under the rear hatch of my 265. Will run it with the old school Furuno RDP 149 v2.

update...this is where its going...

Edit: We did have to trim the angle slightly to make the top parallel with the water.

so its in and working well. I have not been past 180 ft yet but it reads bottom cleanly running 38 mph and still clean at 30 mph in very bumpy seas.
It is a vast improvement over the old B744 on a GSD22
As soon as I get out to 2000ft I will post results.

I run the GSD24/R199 from the 4208 and I use the "Built-in sonar" on the 1242xsv (CHIRP- Sidevu/downvu/traditional with GT51M thruHull)
They operate at different frequencies and I have no interference when running both.
The 4208 and 1242 are on Garmin Network. You have to start Sonar on the 4208 first to gain control of the GSD24.
If you use the 1242 first to run the GSD24 and then change to the built-in, it will disable the GSD24. Then you will not be able to run from the other network MFD (my 4208).
You have to set the 1242 to "built in" not "Auto" then shut down the MFDs, power up and turn on sonar on the 4208 (it has no "built-in" it will take control of the GSD24)
Point is...It is possible to simultaneously view GSD24 on the both 1242 and 4208 but there are circumstances where it will disable the sonar when you switch back.

I put it down with 5200 fast cure. Made sure it did not get the inside messy. Then I sealed the inside to hull with 610 epoxy and some fiberglass tabs.
Filled with -50 deg RV antifreeze

I connected to a new GSD 24 with an 8 pin adapter
boat_21.jpeg

The orange wire is XducerID. It did recognize that there was a 50khz/200khz xducer but it has came up as 500w @340 ohms. I had to go into a super-secret menu to change it using the 4208.
These are instructions that Garmin Support sent me. They were very good...followed thru on several emails.
You're going to need to manual configure the transducer to like you said 2000w to 100ohms for both 50K power and 200k power
For GPSMAP 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, 70xx, and 72xx series chartplotters:

  1. Start with the system powered off
  2. If your transducer does have an XID wire, disconnect it from the 8-pin adapter (I did not do that but it still worked)
  3. Power on the system
  4. Select I Agree
  5. On the Home screen, you will get an alarm that says "Transducer Disconnected, Sonar turned off"
  6. Clear the alarm
  7. Select Configure
  8. Select My Boat
  9. Activate the hidden button
    • On a GPSMAP 4xxx or 6xxx series device, press and hold the Mark button
    • On a GPSMAP 5xxx, 72xx, or 70xx series device, press and hold your thumb in the bottom-left corner of the screen
  10. After 5-10 seconds, Transducer Configuration will appear(you have to HOLD it awhile or it will just Mark a waypoint!!!!)
  11. Select Transducer Configuration
  12. Select 200kHz
  13. Select OK that you understand manual configuration can damage the transducer
  14. Select Manual Enabled to show On
  15. Enter the Impedance and Max Xmit Power of the transducer (available on the Airmar website)
  16. Select Apply
  17. Select 50kHz
  18. Select OK that you understand manual configuration can damage the transducer
  19. Select Manual Enabled to show On
  20. Enter the Impedance and Max Xmit Power of the transducer
  21. Select Apply
  22. Select Home
This would be for the 4208.

The setting goes into the GSD24 so it shows up over the network on the 1242.
To change it on the 1242 I think I would have to remove the orange wire to get into manual setup.
I might run into a problem if the GSD24 or 1242 tries to sense the Xducer ID and reset it. If so, I'll remove the orange wire

an update on the shoot-thru R199 2kw running on a GSD24. With the setting corrected to get the full 2Kw I was reading bottom at 2200ft in Hudson Canyon.
We read a pile of squid on the bottom in 550ft (we caught a squid)
We read tilefish in +500ft. We caught many tilefish.

There is an interference issue with the 1242xsv/GT51M CHIRP when its running at the same time. There are sometimes random streaks running from surface down or from bottom up. Its still very usable that way.

We usually run only the GT51M for inshore/mid-range and wreck fishing. The GSD24/R199 gets used in the canyon
