Quick question:
This past weekend I was fishing/drifting with engines in neutral and went into some low water. Starboard engine went into alarm. I noticed it was showing 0 rpm but it was still running. Raised both engines about a foot and put them in gear but starboard engine didn’t kick into gear. Turned off the SB engine and used the port engine to move into deeper water. Put both engines down and started the SB engine (no more alarm). It went into gear no problem and ran fine rest of day.

So help me figure out what happened… Did maybe the sand block the water intake and cause the SB to get hot and is there a safety preventing the engine from going into gear when that happens? What is the meaning of 0 RPM's showing while the engine is running? The alarm wasn’t on for more than 10 sec before I shut down the engine. I don’t think I ever hit bottom with boat or engines but I doubt it was more than 2 feet of water.

Could have been a plastic ice bag the you picked up. Happed to me. Can't believe it was sand - you would have to be churning it up. Keep an eye on the engine temps, replace thermostats, rebuild water pumps if they are due.

Not sure how the motor could be running and showing 0 RPM. More likely a stall, which started the alarm, and then the 0 RPM makes sense.

That makes sense!! I didn't think that maybe it stalled but that would explain it... Tough to hear the humming of the engines over the alarm. In fact, the more I think of it, the more I'm thinking that is what happened. Thank you!

My 225's sounded an alarm when they stalled. I'm not sure my new 300's do or not.
Same, my 225 port engine would stall/alarm when switching in and out of gear quickly at the dock but would always start right back up. Never could replicate in open water.

You don’t hear a beep every time you turn the key on? It’s done it on my Yamahas, my Suzuki’s and I’m pretty sure my old mercury. You don’t hear a beep when you stall?
not when i turn the key on. havent stalled with my current motor either.

I find it useful, especially with twins, but I find it annoying when working on the boat, and will sometimes just up-plug it, because mine beeps every few seconds when only one motor is running, even with that key off. Unless you are the original owner, maybe a previous one, or a mechanic unplugged it for the same reason.
