I came across an older thread discussing how wet the Grady-White Release 283 can be in rough conditions.

I’d appreciate hearing from owners of the Canyon 271 and Canyon 283 about their experience running into short-period head seas of 2-4 feet.

Are these boats relatively dry in such conditions? If not, what adjustments help reduce wetness without compromising ride comfort?

Most importantly, is the heavier Canyon 271 noticeably drier and provides a softer ride than the Canyon 283, or is it the other way around due to the longer waterline for 283?

I’d particularly appreciate firsthand experience from owners familiar with either or both models.

I have a 306 Canyon. It is very dry in the seas you describe...unless there seas are quartering or the wind is blowing just right. with the spray wings on, it's VERY dry. Note: I have a full windscreen (i.e. goes all the way to the t-top and wraps around.

Thank you very much for your comment. There must be 283 or 271 owners around… hope to hear from them.

Not a Canyon owner but I fish on my buddies 271 all the time. It can be a wet ride, it just depends on the wind direction relative to the boat. Going uphill with wind coming from 10 oclock or 2 oclock, yeah, it gets wet. The wings help but it still gets wet.

That said, that 271 hull is *special*. My personal opinion (worth what you paid for it) is that might be Grady's best hull. It's about as nice of a ride that you will get out of any mono hull.

My dream boat would be a 271 in a walk around config. I'd pull the hard top and do a pilot house in a heartbeat. Sounds sort of like a sailfish, right? Why Grady keeps dumping their walk arounds I have no idea. Sailfish, Gulf Stream, Seafarer, Adventure all gone. Come on, Grady, some of us fish on cold oceans.

If I were younger, and made of money, I'd try start up Grady-White West Coast. Buy the molds for those walk arounds and bring them back. I'd love a pilot house on a Sailfish with modern engines/electronics.
