I see you are new to Grady White and maybe boating. First thing I'll tell you is don't rely on the sounder to keep you from running aground. It's mounted too far back in the boat and by the time it gets shallow you're in trouble. Generally you need to know what depth you are supposed to be in (from chart) and where in the channel you should be. If you are playing around in some back bay tributary go real slow and bring your SeaTow or BoatUS card with you.
The Garmin units work well in "auto" mode. They can sense depth and adjust gain most of the time. Occasionally they get confused over soft bottom, radical depth changes, real shallow water and even thick bait balls. You can ignore it and let it re-sync - sometimes this requires moving around to deeper water. Transducer frequency 50/200 conventional transducer (non-CHIRP) can also cause a similar problem.
First thing I would do is check gain and depth setting. Start in auto mode first. When you have this problem try taking the depth out of auto and move around.
